MAY 2008           Current schedule

Events

Summer Schedule Change:
May 3rd

After your many suggestions from last year we have revamped our summer schedule, now both you and our staff have weekends off. Go camping! Have a BBQ! Spend some time with your family, enjoy!

Don't forget that as of May 3rd, we are now on the NEW spring/summer schedule. Click on the following link to view the schedule: http://www.tienlung.com/edmonton/schedule.htm

Graduation Day

The Spring Graduation will be on May 3rd at the Northlands Agricom, Hall D from 12:00-2:00 pm. If you are scheduled to graduate, you must arrive at 10:30 am, with your full dobok and current belt. Feel free to bring friends, family and your camera to the graduation! There will be a $2.00 admission for family and guests.

Great Human Race

The Great Human Race takes place on Saturday, May 3rd at Sir Winston Churchill Square. This is a great way to raise money for those of our junior and senior athletes in the competitive program! To make pledges you can either approach the person you're donating to, or you can leave your pledge at the front desk in an envelope with your name and phone number on it as well as the name of the person the pledge is going to. You can also pledge on-line at http://www.unitedthisistheway.com/

Coming Soon...
New ID Cards and a
New Scanning Station

Watch for it! Instructors will soon be handing out new ID cards in class, which will replace your old ones. Do NOT attempt to use the old cards once you have received your new ones. Your new card MUST NOT be attached to your Student Manual. Instead, we recommend you attach your card to a lanyard and onto your training bag. The scanner will be moved to the front entrance on the main floor, when you will scan your card after you remove your shoes and before you head to the change rooms. It is mandatory that EVERYONE scans their card prior to class. Those who are using the weight room on a gym membership, we ask that you scan your card prior to your workout.

Music

In an effort to keep the "family" atmosphere and due to the combined ages of all the levels in class, in the dojang our staff has decided to try and be even more selective of what music we play both in the training area and the Dojang at large.

Calling all Grandmothers, Grandfathers or anyone with some extra time

Do you have a free hour every day or every few days? Well, we need a new driver for Daily Dragons, and we want YOU! Or if you know anyone who would be willing to join our team, please contact our administration at 669-6666.

Mothers Day Class!

In honor of Mother's Day, we want you to bring your Mom, Aunt, Grandmother, older sister (or any female) to class with you on Wednesday, May 7th or Thursday, May 8th! Have your guest wear some comfortable clothing, and she will participate in class with you. You will be able to show her what you have learned in Taekwon-Do, and she will also be able to try some basic moves! (Don't worry-nothing too strenuous!) All you need to do is pick up a guest waiver form, and have your mom (or guest) sign it, and bring it back with you and your guest on May 7th or 8th! Looking forward to seeing you all there! Psst....this is a great way to check off "YES" for bringing a friend to the Dojang or Tien Lung function on your Qualification Requirement

Paintball

Dip, Dive and Dodge! The Southside school has challenged our location! We need everyone to come join our Instructor Team and show your Tien Lung pride and together we can take on the Southside school. The Cost is $40.00, this includes 500 Paintballs, a paintball gun, camo schmock, mask and unlimited CO2. You can get an additional 500 paintballs for only $25.00! If you have your own gear the cost is $30.00 (which includes 500 paintballs). Please sign up at the Front Desk, and you MUST fill out the waiver form - available at the front desk! Something to Think About...

"Don't say you don't have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michaelangelo, Mother Teresa, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, Albert Einstein and Mr. Wisniewski."

The Most Important Martial Arts Technique

One of the first things an instructor teaches the beginning white belt is how to come to attention. The students stand up straight, heels together toes apart hands by your sides. Their eyes maintain eye contact with the instructor and they are almost ready for training. Except for one thing: bow.

Bending at the waist and lowering the head, the student signals that they recognize the instructor as someone who is knowledgeable and proper in behavior and toward whom they hold deference, either felt or shown. This means they hold another person in high regard and treat them how they want to be treated.

A student of Martial Arts must master respect to the school's flag, instructor and other students.

Respect to the flag - Upon entering the training area of the new white belts school, the student is taught to bow to the flag hung on the school's wall. This means that the area the student is about to enter is special, and somehow different than just another room.

The student bows to the flag and respects the country's long tradition of Martial Arts excellence and the students respect for their place in the schools hierarchy of training, often symbolized in the color of the belt around the students waist.

Respect to the Instructor - Bowing to the instructor symbolizes many things. Typically, this helps build trust between the student and the teacher of the martial arts. Recognizing the leadership the instructor offers is another meaning conveyed between the two martial artists. Most importantly, bowing to the instructor demonstrates the student knows less and is an "empty cup" ready to become filled with the knowledge of the style taught in the schools walls.

When a student bows to an instructor, it demonstrates the students willingness to grow and improve their training... everyday!

Respect to other students - Before practicing a new technique, or sparring with another student, the two partners bow. Receiving a bow demonstrates to one another that each will maintain good sportsmanship throughout the exercise. It shows the other student is appealing to a sense of fair play and that the student respects the others training as equally important. It indicates techniques will be controlled preventing injuries.

Maintaining self control throughout these exercises is just as important as practicing the technique. Conveying a sense of common ground, a sense of unspoken rules, is necessary to shake any fear of being intentionally hurt during practice. Bowing sets the tone for respect toward each other throughout all exercises.
