Something to Think About...

Meeting your Fitness Goals

One of the many reasons that people are attracted to practicing Taekwon-Do is physical fitness. Taekwon-Do can help you increase your cardiovascular heath, reduce fat, and help to build muscle. However, an often-overlooked aspect of physical training is the identification of realistic goals that will help you reach your desired level of fitness. In this article we will try to give you some important tips for determining what different activities are necessary in developing a workout routine and some helpful hints to assist you in working toward your fitness goals.

Most exercises can be broken down into four categories. The categories are, cardiovascular fitness, bone and muscle strength, and flexibility. To reach a true state of physical fitness, it is necessary to choose exercises from all the above listed categories. Exercises included in the cardiovascular category are those exercises that help you increase the fitness of your lungs and heart. As anyone who has ever sparred for more than a couple of minutes can tell you, this category is especially important in the practice of Taekwon-Do. These types of exercises include activities that increase your heart rate from 60 to 90 percent of its maximum, usually for a period of at least 10 minutes. Increasing your cardiovascular health will give you more endurance and a greater amount of energy. Bone and muscle exercises are designed to help you increase strength and power. Exercises in this category include push-ups and isometric exercises. Bone and muscle exercises place most of their focus on the major muscle groups (arms, shoulders, hips, legs, back and abdominals). Muscle strength is often important to martial artists because it enables you to add more power to your kicks and punches and generally gives you a greater amount of physical control.

Flexibility is of great importance in practicing Taekwon-Do. Flexibility exercises help you to increase the range-of-motion in all your muscle groups, and help to prevent injuries caused by over exertion of muscles. You should try to incorporate flexibility activities into all of your exercise sessions. Be sure to eat properly and stay away from fatty foods.

Set goals that are realistic - both in your current physical level and the amount of time that you have each day to engage to fitness activities. Workout before or after school or work or al lunch time and attended your Taekwon-Do classes regularly.
